The great Paul Flato- Jeweler to the Stars.

Paul Flato ...Emeralds beads and diamonds earrings set in platinum.

Mr. Flato in front of his store in the Zona Rosa district of Mexico City-  were he reinvented himself (at 75!) and set up shop in later years.

Over-the-top, as if there was such a thing in Hollywood.  Flamboyant, dramatic- its Hollywood remember- Mr. Flato was a contemporary of Seaman Schepps, Fulco Verdura, David Webb...sometimes overlooked however never by his peers.  In our capacity as source providers of unusual gemstones we had business relations with Mr. Flato during the final years of his career when he opened up shop in the Zona Rosa in Mexico City.

Mr. Don Loper ...extremely talented and notoriously difficult yet devoted to his friends.

Lucille Ball once observed  "Don treats a movie star like a laundry girl and a laundry girl like a movie star".  He once saw a famous customer walking up to his store and ran over and locked the door saying "Shes not coming in here dressed like that".  Mr. Loper was a bit of a renaissance man from acting, dancing, choreography to fashion and interior design. His boutique in Beverly Hills was successful  ...However he made his real money by licencing his designs to Downtown L.A. and New York apparel firms that mass produced and distributed his designs to the hundreds of regional boutiques and department stores across the country. His neck ties were still in production well into the 1980's even though Mr. Loper passed away in 1972.
Ad for Don's Ready-to-wear line.
Don and his salon made a guest appearance on "I love Lucy" ...apparently Miss Ball and Don were not on speaking terms for years after.

Laykin et Cie Jewelry salon in the I.MAGNIN's department store in Beverly Hills

Laykin et Cie started out in Downtown Los Angeles in 1932 then in 1936 opened a retail boutique on Sunset Blvd. and expanded from there-  eventually opening boutiques in most of the I.MAGNIN department stores in California.  Including San Francisco, Beverly Hills and La Jolla.
Sol Laykin liked big, flashy, quality and interesting gemstones-  developing a style and look that would come to epitomize Beverly Hills "cocktail jewelry".  Sophisticated, sometimes flamboyant, statement jewelry that you could actually wear and know for certain you had an exclusive look.
